Fans’ favorite Tom Cleverly, a former Manchester United midfielder, revealed his retirement from the football world at the age of 33, adducing nagging injuries.
Though during the 2009-10 season, the former England international recently captained Watford and joined the United Championship on loan. He skillfully made 181 appearances, scoring 19 times and recording 15 assists during his six-and-a-half-year spell at Watford after joining Everton on loan for a second time and making the move permanent in 2017.
Also, his last season was plagued by injuries, as he missed 29 games for Watford, who finished 11th in the championship standings.
What was the reason behind Tom Cleverly decision?
Cleverly underwent surgery on an Achilles tendon injury before picking up a thigh injury in February that ruled him out for a lengthy spell at the start of last season.
“Today, I am announcing my retirement from football as a player. Overcoming the obstacles of injury has been extremely difficult over the past year,” the former Premier League winner said in a statement on Saturday.
“Unfortunately, his body has failed him and can no longer function.” He also mentioned Manchester United and said, “the people and the club that formed the foundation of him as a player and a person and also the club that made his dreams come true…”
“To everyone involved at Watford Football Club. I am privileged to call this club home… the love you have shown me as a young man beholden to time. If I don’t retire, I can never repay it.”

Therefore, the former Manchester United Midfielder smartly showed much promise early in his career but was often hampered by injury, and his form could have been more consistent. He spent four full seasons with Watford in the Premier League and two seasons in the Championship. His retirement meant he had made 146 appearances for the Hornets and 379 appearances in his club career. But Watford said: “The club and Tom will announce some exciting news very soon.”
