Football: Former German international Khedira will work with Flick before the 2024 Euros: 8 June Berlin (Germany) The hardest obstacle Hansi Flick has faced since taking over as coach of the 2014 world champions in August 2021 is currently facing the German national team.
Flick is concentrating his efforts on creating a competitive team for the UEFA Euro 2024, which will be hosted by Germany, after the underwhelming 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
After a string of disappointing tournaments, Flick and legendary German striker Rudi Voller, a former Leverkusen director, struggled to win back the support of the crowd.
The German association is in talks with former Real Madrid and Juventus player Sami Khedira as Flick chooses a new team in preparation for the 2024 competition, according to Xinhua.
Hannes Wolf, a former Stuttgart coach who will be in charge of talent development, and 36-year-old Khedira are both anticipated to join the national team staff and assume strategic roles.
According to Bernd Neuendorf, the president of the German Football Association, the negotiations are “in the final stages,” and Voller is in favor of the idea to increase the staff’s level of experience.
Plans for the remainder of 2023 have already been established by Flick and Voller, and they include friendlies against Ukraine, Poland, Colombia, Japan, France, the United States, and Austria.
Although Germany has already qualified for the tournament in 2024 as the host nation, the team will only be participating in friendlies before the event, which could not offer as much competitiveness as games that count towards qualification.
Pressure from the German coach is mounting on potential team members. For instance, Flick declined to recommend Niklas Sule of Dortmund because he was unsatisfied with the defender’s performance.

Pressure from the German coach is mounting on potential team members. For instance, Flick declined to recommend Niklas Sule of Dortmund because he was unsatisfied with the defender’s performance.
“Niklas has all the qualities to be a top-class international defender,” says Flick, adding that he expects a stronger mentality and greater tenacity from his team. It appears that 90 percent is plenty in the domestic league, though. The discrepancy is made up of the missing 10%.
Flick has stated that he will give his players candid input at internal meetings, but will shield them from criticism in his public remarks. He thinks that effective team communication is crucial to success.
Both Matthias Sammer, an advisor, and Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke enthusiastically support Khedira’s hiring, which satisfies Voller’s need to assemble a strong team to help him.
Khedira is anticipated to leave his advising position at his previous club VfB Stuttgart before taking up national team duty. The association has already appointed Wolf as the under-20 team’s coach.
