Five Records were broken by Shubman Gill following his magnificent 129-run performance against MI in IPL Qualifier 2 in 2023: When he delivered an incredible 129-run inning against the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the crucial Qualifier 2 of the ongoing IPL 2023 on Friday, May 26, Shubman Gill once again showed why he is a cut above the rest.
In the important game, Gill thrashed MI and guaranteed his club a spot in the IPL final for the second time in a row. Gujarat will now compete against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Sunday, May 28.
In a game that was delayed due to rain, Mumbai put GT in to bat first, and the Titans’ openers Gill and Wriddhiman Saha got their team off to a strong start. Following the conclusion of the powerplay overs, they brought GT to 50/0. In the seventh over, Saha was stumped, but Gill kept moving forward.
Gill, who occasionally hit boundaries in the overs, bided his time in the middle before settling in to terrorize MI in the innings’ second half.
The right-hander went into beast mode after scoring 50 in 32 balls. He gave the spectators at the Narendra Modi Stadium another example of his amazing strokeplay. At the midway point, GT was at 91/1, but Gill completely changed the game in his team’s favor by destroying the MI bowlers all over the pitch.
In the eleventh over, he struck Akash Madhwal three times for six figures and was unforgiving to other bowlers as well. Before he hit a ball too long on and added another thrilling century, Gill needed just 48 balls to reach 99.
1 Highest individual score in an IPL playoff innings
The previous record, set by Virender Sehwag in IPL 2014 versus CSK with 122 runs, was surpassed by Gill’s 129 runs. Interestingly, Sehwag also scored a century during that season’s Qualifier 2 game.
2 Most runs in a sequence of six and four consecutive IPL innings
He has scored in his previous six innings for totals of 129, 42, 104, 101, 6, and 94*. In his last six IPL innings, he has totaled 476 runs. This surpasses Jos Buttler’s record of 456 runs, which he scored in six consecutive innings for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2022, as the most ever scored by anyone in the history of the competition.
Furthermore, Gill has scored a total of 376 runs in his last four innings. This surpasses Virat Kohli’s record of 351 runs scored in four straight games during the 2016 IPL to become the most runs scored by any hitter in four straight IPL innings.
3 Second-highest score by an Indian in IPL history
The flashy opener also set a record by becoming the Indian batter with the second-highest individual score in IPL history.
Only KL Rahul’s 132*-run knock, which he made against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) during IPL 2020, is better than Gill’s 129 runs.
Rishabh Pant was surpassed by Gill in the score. In 2018, Pant outperformed the Sunrisers Hyderabad with a magnificent 128* against them.
4 Most sixes in an inning in IPL play-off
Gill crushed a total of 10 sixes against the MI bowlers in the course of his innings, tearing at them with absolute contempt. His 10 maximums are currently the most any batsman has hit in an IPL playoff game inning.
Before him, the record for eight sixes was held by Saha, Virender Sehwag, Chris Gayle, and Shane Watson.
Additionally, Gill currently has the joint-most maximums of any hitter against the Mumbai Indians with his 10 totals. Rashid Khan also smacked 10 sixes against MI at the Wankhede Stadium earlier in IPL 2023.
5 Joint-fastest 100 in an IPL playoff game
Despite being at 37 off 26 at one stage, Gill changed gears well and needed just 49 total balls to reach his third century of the year.
His 49-ball century is currently tied for the fastest in an IPL playoff game. With Rajat Patidar and Wriddhiman Saha, who each needed 49 balls to get their centuries, Gill now shares the record.
