FIH Pro League: With a 2-1 victory over Argentina, India finishes the season with 30 points: On Sunday, India defeated Argentina 2-1 to complete their campaign in the Men’s FIH Pro League. Akashdeep Singh and Sukhjeet Singh both scored a goal in the opening period.
The gold medalist from the Rio Olympics, Argentina, was defeated by India by a similar margin a few days earlier, and Sunday’s victory brought their total in the nine-team double-round robin event to 30 points after 16 games.
India took the lead in the opening minute thanks to Akashdeep Singh, and India added another field goal in the thirteenth. Argentina’s Lucas Toscani added a second goal off a penalty corner in the 57th minute.
With 30 points earned through eight wins outright, three shootout victories, one shootout loss, and five losses, India maintained its lead at the top of the standings. With 26 points after 12 games, Great Britain is in second place, followed by Australia with 19 points from 13 games.
India got off to a fast start in the game. India had no issue scoring within the first two minutes of the game thanks to a simple put-in by Akashdeep Singh from right in front of the goal as the Argentina defense struggled to get going and made a number of blunders.
With a minute remaining in the first quarter, the Indians doubled their advantage. A sliding Sukhjeet Singh received the ball from Akashdeep and Vivek Sagar Prasad in front of the goal, effortlessly breaching the Argentine defense once more.
Although Argentina played better in the second half, their breakthrough didn’t come until there were two and a half minutes left in the game. Lucas Toscani scored the opening goal for Los Leones after Nicolas Della Torre sent the ball to him from a penalty corner.
In the waning seconds, they put pressure on for an equalizer, but it was too late to stop India from winning 2-1 in their final game of the FIH Hockey Pro League season.
The player of the game was Vivek Sagar Prasad. “It was a perfect fit for us. We finished strong with a victory in this, our final game in the Pro League, so that’s incredibly excellent for us. The FIH quoted him as saying, “Now we need to concentrate on what was good in this competition and, more significantly, on what we need to improve like PC conversion and more counterattacks.
