FiFA To Have Female Referees For Men World Cup
FIFA revealed three female referees and three female assistant referees among 129 officials chosen for World Cup duty on Thursday, including one man who sparked controversy in January when overseeing a chaotic African Cup of Nations game despite suffering from heatstroke.
Following her management of the 2019 Women’s World Cup final, French referee Stéphanie Frappart has already worked men’s games in World Cup qualification and the Champions League. This month, she also officiated in the men’s French Cup final.
FIFA Referees Committee head Pierluigi Collina, who handled the 2002 World Cup final said “”As always, the criteria we have employed is ‘quality first,’ and the selected match officials represent the top level of officiating globally. “By doing so, we clearly demonstrate that we value quality over gender.”
Salima Mukansanga of Rwanda and Yoshimi Yamashita of Japan are also on the list of 36 referees preparing for the tournament’s 64 games, which will be contested from November 21 to December 18.
Among the 69 assistant referees are Neuza Back of Brazil, Karen Daz Medina of Mexico, and Kathryn Nesbitt of the U.s.
“I hope that in the future, the selection of great women’s match officials for significant men’s championships will be seen as regular and not as exceptional,” Collina stated.
The match was played amid Cameroon’s heat and humidity, and Sikazwe subsequently said that the extreme circumstances caused him to become disoriented.
Sikazwe will be working in his second World Cup after managing two group games in Russia in 2018.
Due to the excessive heat in Qatar, FIFA decided to transfer the event to the cooler months in the Gulf state in 2015.
FIFA has chosen 24 persons to function as video reviewers. The VAR system first appeared in 2018.
