Federer Drops Out Of ATP Rankings After Wimbledon Defeat
Federer Drops Out Of ATP Rankings After Wimbledon Defeat. Roger Federer dropped out of the ATP rankings for the first time in a quarter century on Monday, while Novak Djokovic slid four spots to 7 on Tuesday.
Since Federer made his debut at the age of 16 in September 1997, he’s appeared in the singles rankings each and every week. The record for most weeks spent at number one for male players belonged to Djokovic until he beat it by a single week.
With no recent tournaments, Roger Federer has been eliminated in the ranking system of the previous 52 weeks. With a more competitive ranking system, players are pitted against each other regardless of where they stand on the actual rankings.
After a win at the 2016 Australian Open dwindled in just three games, Federer had a third knee operation. The Swiss tennis player said he wants to come back to tournament play in his home country this October, and hopes he can play Wimbledon next year.
Djokovic’s drop, caused by the decision to not award any ranking points for Wimbledon in response to the All England Club’s ban on athletes from Russia and Belarus over the war in Ukraine, is a result of Kyrgios’ performance at Wimbledon.
On Monday, Wimbledon generated a new points system in which the old points were voided and the new ones appeared. While this had nothing to do with Djokovic, Kyrgios, and the other players who lost their points when they were too far in the future.
Elena Rybakina did not do well in the rankings for her first Grand Slam title. She remains at #23, and is ranked second-lowest for women’s champions of the professional era. The tournament began in 1968.
Despite her best performance at a major, the woman she beat in the finals on Saturday, Ons Jabeur dropped to No. 5.
Some women who reached career highs on Monday include Australian Open runner-up Danielle Collins in at No. 7, US Open champion Emma Raducanu in at No. 10, and French Open runner-up Coco Gauff in at No. 11.
Iga Swiatek, who held the title of French Open champion this year, is still at No.1 while Daniil Medvedev who wasn’t allowed to compete at Wimbledon keeps his top ranking among the men’s players.
