The Northern Irish champions from Belfast had a tough fight against the opponents from Wales, and came out on top with 2-1 aggregate score. The visitors to Windsor Park survived a scare against KI Klaksvik in round one, but managed to advance 4-1 so the Blues supporters were relieved when Linfield managed to win their first game.
Linfield were trailing 1-0 on aggregate, and they started the second half with a long shot to try and get ahead. But in stoppage time of the second half, Linfield got another goal, which kept them alive in Europe.
David Healy’s team won 8-1 in their last friendly match to motivate themselves for the Northern Ireland Football League in Linfield.
Linfield are the first Rangers to play the second round of Champions League qualifying in the past few seasons. They can now play in the third round of Europe’s elite competition if they get through, but they still have a chance of playing in Europe’s Europa League.
Bodo/Glimt’s Nigerian target man Victor Boniface had seemingly steered his side into the second round of Champions League qualifying with a first-leg hat-trick against KI Klaksvik, but the Faroe Islands champions threatened quite the comeback one week later.
Mads Boe Mikkelsen assisted Jakup Andreasen to score a goal in the 12th minute of play. Despite the assist, Lillo Boniface scored again as in the match before and prevented Danish side from coming back.
Kjetil Knutsen’s men made reaching the second round more difficult, but then returned to their winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Hamarkameratene in the Eliteserien. Amahl Pellegrino contributed two goals off the bench.
The Europa League quarter-finalists last season are already assured of the best finish in Champions League qualifying. They lost to Legia Warsaw in the first round this season, but they have some ground to make up in Norway as they are five points behind Molde and Lillestrom.
Linfield will be playing against Bodo/Glimt for the first time ever this weekend, and whichever team wins the two-legged tie will learn their potential opponents for the third round on Monday.
Linfield already made all of the changes their allowed before with 10 men on the field because they player, Joel Cooper was stretchered off with a muscular problem. Linfield is expected to use Jordan Stewart or Devine in place of Cooper.
If Matthew Clarke and Chris Shields book flights to Norway, they will miss the second leg because of the time difference and need to be careful not to book a flight before Tuesday. For Bodo-Glimt, Ola Solbakken is injured and will likely not play in the first leg.
Boniface had not been given a chance to play in the domestic game and at some point should rejoin the starting lineup.
Linfield’s possible starting lineup: Johns; Finlayson, Hall, Roscoe, Clarke; Mulgrew, Shields, Fallon; Millar, McKee, Stewart. Bodo/Glimt’s possible starting lineup: Haikin; Wembangomo, Amundsen, Hoibraten, Sampsted; Saltnes, Hagen, Vetlesen; Pellegrino Boniface Mugisha
After fighting for their place in the Conference League, Bodo/Glimt and Knutsen will be determined to avoid any similar scares from here on out. The team from Linfield had an astonishing comeback in their first round second leg while they were at the right end of a comeback.
Their defense will be tough as expected but the team has lost Cooper in a bitter blow. Typically, teams win with a two-goal lead, but I am only expecting Bodo/Glimt to make it happen.
