Joe Root (115) scored a century as England beat New Zealand by five wickets in the first match of the three-Test series. With this win, they have taken a 1-0 lead in the series. On the fourth day of the match on Sunday, England scored the necessary 61 runs without any extra loss. The hosts started the day with a score of 216/5. He had got a target of 277 runs in the last innings.
New Zealand had scored 285 runs in their second innings. While England scored 141 runs in the first innings in reply to the Kiwis’ 132. They got a lead of 9 runs in the first innings.
Stokes-McCullum pair won
In this match, England had landed on the field with the new team. The English board appointed former Kiwi batsman Brendon McCullum as the coach of the team. While Ben Stokes was made the captain. This was the first Test for the McCullum-Stokes pair.
The team has won after 9 matches. He achieved the last victory against India on 25 August 2021. English Board Joe Root stepped down from captaincy after a crushing defeat in the Ashes. While McCullum replaced Chris Silverwood.

Alastair Cook (12472) had done this before him. The root is the 14th batsman in the world to complete 10,000 runs. These include three Indians (Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sunil Gavaskar).
