Another big upset was seen in the T20 World Cup to be played in Australia on Wednesday. The England team, which won the T20 World Cup in 2010, was defeated by Ireland by 5 runs on the basis of the Duckworth-Lewis rule. Ireland is 12th in the T20 rankings while England is at number three.
England won the toss and elected to field first. Ireland was all out for 157 in 19.2 overs. Andy Balbarney scored the highest 62 runs from his side. When it rained, England had scored 105 runs in 14.3 overs and their 5 wickets had fallen. Moeen Ali was at the crease for 24 runs and Liam Livingstone scored 1 run.
It was then decided on the basis of the Duckworth-Lewis method and Ireland won. Both the teams were face to face in the T20 World Cup after 12 years. The important thing is that in that match of the 2010 World Cup also it rained. However, there was no result then.
After this, both the teams were face to face in the 2011 ODI World Cup. Then Ireland defeated England.
What is Duckworth and Lewis’s Law?
Friend Duckworth and Tony Lewis gave a mathematical method for the matches that could not be decided due to rain. It was used for the first time in an international match in 1997. Earlier, ICC only looked at the run average of the team. That is, in the match, the team which scored the highest average during the rain was declared the winner.
