She thanked Goffin for all his support and advice during this tenure of 7 months. Mertens pointed their “different views” about the way she need to play were “too challenging”. The situation remained for this collaboration. There is no announcement about the new coach.
On Twitter, she penned, “I want to inform you that the collaboration with my coach Simon Goffin has come to an end.” “I am very grateful for his advice and support, but the difference in our visions of becoming a better player has become very large.” “I wish Simon the best, and I am sure he will find a new challenge soon. I now want to focus on the semi-final match and will keep you posted on the continuation of my program in the United States.”
Based on press information from Belgium, Goffin is not there for Wimbledon.
The pair collaborated during the offseason of 2021. Mertens reached the fourth round for both the Australian Open & French Open this season. It happened under Simon’s guidance but failed to go beyond the quarterfinals for the singles event.
Her career-high rank was No. 12 in 2018. The current rank of Mertens is No. 31 in the singles.
