Ecuador is permitted to compete in the FIFA World Cup by CAS
However, CAS imposed a 100,000 Swiss franc punishment on the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) for submitting a document with “fake information,” the court announced Tuesday.
Beginning with the 2026 World Cup qualification season, Ecuador will additionally get a penalty of three points.
According to Xinhua, the FIFA verdict in September refuted claims made by the Chilean federation that full-back Byron Castillo, who is Colombian, played for Ecuador despite being a member of that country’s national team.
Castillo was identified as an Ecuadorian national by CAS, which recognised official testimony to that effect.
Castillo was identified as an Ecuadorian citizen by authorities, according to CAS, which confirmed their testimony.
Although the player’s Ecuadorian passport was genuine, some of the information on it was fraudulent “explained CAS.
“In particular, the panel felt certain that the athlete’s birthdate and locale were false because the player was actually born on June 25, 1995, in Tumaco, Colombia. Even though the FEF was simply the user of the fabricated document and not its author, the panel felt it appropriate to hold the FEF accountable for an act of fabrication.”
Officials from the FEF stated that they were considering the option of appealing the punishment and point penalty. Ecuador has denied any misconduct.
Prior to playing Senegal and the Netherlands in their subsequent Group A fixtures, the South American team will commence its World Cup campaign on November 20 in the tournament’s first encounter against the hosts Qatar.
