Dustin Johnson denies Anirban Lahiri from winning the LIV Boston event in the playoff. When Dustin Johnson hit an eagle putt from 35 feet on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to win the LIV Golf Invitational in Boston, it was the first big moment for LIV Golf. It was also Johnson’s first victory in 19 months.
The putt that Johnson was making on the par-5 18th hole was moving so quickly that it may have gone about 6 feet beyond the hole on Sunday. However, it struck the back of the cup and fell down to the area towards the front of the cup, allowing it to win against Joaquin Niemann and Anirban Lahiri.
He went for a slow-motion uppercut but instead slapped hands with Austin Johnson, who was both his brother and his caddie. He had raised his arm and then lowered it. Johnson took home $4 million in prize money for his victory. As a result of his team’s continued success, he has amassed a total of USD 9,962,500 over the four competitions.
Declarations
With a broad grin, Johnson remarked that even though the pace was picking up a bit, it was still a solid line. “The first time I played No. 18, I had some unfortunate breaks,” I said. It owed me one, and I was able to collect it.
An otherwise sloppy finish by so many other players who had a chance was salvaged by the first playoff in a total of four LIV Golf competitions.
In order to finish with a score lower than 65, Johnson needed to make a birdie on the par-5 18th hole. He had to scrabble for par to join Lahiri (64), and Niemann (66) at 15-under 265 when his drive bounced into the right rough, and his iron to lay up went into the woods much to the left.
On the 18th hole, in regulation, Lahiri shot a fairway metal to within 5 feet of the hole, but his eagle putt, which would have won the hole for him, rolled past the right edge of the cup.
After shooting a 62 and making bogeys on two of his final three holes, Lee Westwood did not make it into the playoff and finished in second place. When he recovered from his bogey on the first hole of the shotgun start by making a short birdie on the second par-3, he put himself in a position to win the competition.
He concluded on hole No. 3, which had yardage of 352 and presented a fantastic opportunity to make a birdie. The lob wedge that Westwood hit was so fat that it came up about forty feet short of the pin and into a bunker instead. He started off poorly and ended up missing the par putt from 18 feet away.
Westwood said that the lob wedge might have used a touch less fat.
Remark
“If I make 3, I will win the tournament, and if I make 5, I will win.” It’s a vile way to bring things to a close.” Cameron Smith, the British Open winner, scored 63 and is one of six players who have just accepted contracts with the Saudi-funded league. He was also tied for the lead up until the point where he drove his tee shot into the trees on the first hole of his 17th hole and was forced to pitch out sideways. He made bogey.
Both Smith and Westwood finished in fourth place. Each made just over USD 1 million.
Since the Saudi International on February 7, 2021, which was played as part of the European tour calendar, Johnson has not been victorious in a tournament since then. When he signed with LIV Golf, the golfer who has been No. 1 for the longest amount of time compared to anyone else since Tiger Woods fell out of the top 15 in the global rankings.
Since the beginning of the rival league in early June outside of London, he has participated in all of its competitions and placed in the top 10.
Statements
He stated, “I’ve had a chance to win each and every one of them.”
“That’s three wins in a row for the team, and for me to earn my first, I’m feeling fantastic,” he said. “That’s three in a row for the squad.” As he left the 18th green, he did it while holding a phone in his hand and conducting a video conversation with his two sons.
Both Lahiri and Niemann earned slightly more than $1.8 million despite their defeat in the playoff. After the conclusion of the PGA Tour season, they were among the six players who signed contracts with LIV Golf.
