Team India skipper Rohit Sharma unwittingly made fans laugh again as he appeared at the toss for the opening T20I against Afghanistan.
On Thursday, January 11, Rohit led the home squad against the Afghan team at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali.
The experienced Indian hitter was making his comeback in the shortest format.
He last played a T20I in 2022, in the semi-finals of the T20I World Cup against England.
He did not play in a single T20I game in 2023 but has returned to the
T20 fold this year in preparation for the 2024 T20 World Cup in June.
He won the toss in the opening T20I against Afghanistan and decided to pursue it despite the misty conditions.
A humorous event occurred while he was discussing the Indian squad composition for the match with Murali Karthik following the toss.
Sanju, Avesh, and Yashasvi, who did not pull up properly, are missing out, according to Rohit. And then another. I warned you before the coin toss.
Murali Karthik then offered the name, Kuldeep Yadav.
Rohit stated that he was playing, but then corrected himself by clarifying that Kuldeep was not in the XI.
The Indian T20I squad, captained by Rohit Sharma, began their quest to the 2024 World Cup with a victory against Afghanistan in the first T20I
On Thursday, Team India kicked off their preparations for the 2018 T20 World Cup with a strong team effort against Afghanistan in the first T20I.
Afghanistan batted first and finished with 158/8 thanks to
Mohammad Nabi (42), Azmatullah Omarzai (29), Ibrahim Zadran (25), and Rahmanullah Gurbaz (23).
India then easily chased down the mark in 17.3 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Shivam Dube’s all-round excellence was the most significant positive for India, who are seeking a backup option for the injured Hardik Pandya.
Dube took most of the occasion, bowling a good stint of 2-0-9-1 with the ball before
hitting a match-winning 60* (40) to claim the Player of the Match title.
At the post-match presentation, Dube reflected on his performance, saying, “I think it was really cold, but I enjoyed playing here.”
The pressure was on when I batted at number four, but I knew I had to play my game.
I probably felt the pressure from my side at first, but I kept going.
I’m aware that I can hit sixes and affect the game.
I spoke with Rohit, who stated that I played well and that we would review the innings further.
Today, I had the opportunity to bowl, and I attempted to carry out the plans that had been established.
The focus now switches to Indore, where India and Afghanistan will play the second Twenty20 International on Sunday, January 14.
