Drama on the charts for ICC as Disney sub-license media rights: Cricket fans now have to subscribe to three streaming channels to watch their favorite players. Zee is new on the list, as soon as the news broke out fans and critics were in shock. A few days back, ICC issued its media rights to Disney.
This meant just like any other Indian or ICC match on Hotstar, fans can watch the world cup on the same platform. But now it’s reported that Disney has sublicensed its media rights to zee. Now fans have to subscribe to Star to watch Indian matches, Sony for overseas, and Zee TV for World cups.
After entering a strategic media rights partnership for the 2024-27 cycle with ICC men’s events, they landed the rights. As far as streaming is concerned, now there are three platforms – Hotstar, Voot, and SonyLiv.
Disney said in a press conference
Disney held a joint press conference in a statement that said ” Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited and Disney star are today announcing that they have entered into a strategic licensing agreement”
“By which Disney star will license the television broadcasting rights to Zee.” The rights of international cricket council’s Mens and under 19 Global events for 4 years. “Disney star will continue to be the Exclusive streaming platform for all ICC tournaments through its digital platform Disney+ Hotstar. ICC has in principle approved this agreement.
They further added ” The association will Zee to be exclusive television rights holder of ICC events including coveted ICC T20 World Cup 2024, 2026, ICC men’s Champions Trophy 2025, ICC men cricket world cup 2027, along with the key ICC under-19 events.
Goenka stated ” This is the first kind of partnership in the Indian media and entertainment landscape. The association with Disney star reflects how sharp the strategic vision of the sports business is in India. As a one-stop television destination for ICC men’s cricket tournaments until 2027, we will use the strength of its network to offer an experience for its viewers and a grand return on investment for advertisers.”
Disney Star manager and President K Madhavan said ” By securing IPL television rights for 2023-27 and now opting to retain only digital rights for ICC tournament 2024-27. We are in a place of a balanced and robust cricket offering for our audience across linear and digital.
As far as the star is concerned, this step is an effort to balance the books after leaking out 3 million dollars for IPL TV rights and subcontinent. From a Viewership perspective, the Strategic Alliance would leave it to pick and choose
