Diogo Abreu shone in the Trampoline World Rankings
Diogo Abreu shone in the Trampoline World Rankings. What is FIG?
The International Gymnastics Federation – Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique in French and thus the abbreviation FIG, is a body of competitive gymnastics. The headquarters of FIG is in Lausanne, Switzerland. It was founded on July 23, in the year 1881, in Liège in Belgium. It is the world’s oldest existing international sports organization.
Originally it was called the European Federation of Gymnastics, and had three member countries:
- Belgium
- France
- Netherland
When the non-European countries got admission, it received its current name.
The federation has a set of rules: the “Code of Points” to regulate how the performances of the gymnasts are critically evaluated. Seven disciplines of gymnastics are governed by the FIG:
- Artistic gymnastics – men’s artistic gymnastics (MAG) and women’s artistic gymnastics (WAG)
- Rhythmic gymnastics (RG)
- Aerobic Gymnastics (AER)
- Acrobatic gymnastics (ACRO)
- Trampolining (TRA) – Double mini-trampoline (DMT),
- Tumbling (TUM)
- Parkour
The federation is also responsible for determining the age eligibility of the gymnasts to participate in the Olympics.
Diogo Abreu’s victory
Diogo Abreu (POR) was the most successful participant in the 2022 FIG Trampoline Gymnastics World Cup Series, and he topped the rankings of both men’s Individual and men’s Synchronized Trampoline (partner – Pedro Ferreira).
The total of the three best scores obtained in the four Trampoline World Cups was counted towards each competitor’s and pair’s ranking
The four World Cups:
- Baku (AZE)
- Rimini (ITA)
- Coimbra (POR)
- Arosa (SUI)
Points distribution
1st place – points – 60
2nd place – points – 55
3rd place – points – 50
Points are earned even at a non-medal position, from point 1 to point 30. Prize money is reserved only for the top three ranked gymnasts.
The total points Abreu made is 144 which he secured individually by winning two bronze medals at two World Cups (Coimbra and Arosa) and a position of fourth in February in Baku helped him to shoot up in the graph
Following Abreu is Danil Mussabayev (KAZ) at second place in the men’s Individual ranking with 132 points. He won a bronze medal in Baku in February and bagged the fifth position in Rimini and the fourth in Arosa. He competed at all four World Cups.
The surprise of the tournament is the third place bagged by Nishioka Ryusei (JPN) with 120 points while competing in only two events – Coimbra in June and Arosa in July. The reason behind this place was the attainment of gold medals both times.
Diogo Abreu and Pedro Ferreira (POR) are featured in the first rank in the men’s Synchronised Trampoline category. They received bronze medals in Baku and Arosa. They missed a medal in Coimbra u fortunately, but because they got fourth place it gave them the advantage of 44 points which contributed to their total of 144 points.
Fabian Vogel and Matthias Pfleiderer from Germany ranked in second place winning silver medals. They participated and competed in Rimini and Arosa only, winning bronze and silver respectively, which gave them 105 points.
Securing third place with 94 points were Jeremy Chartier and Remi Aubin of Canada. They won a bronze medal in Coimbra.
The near future has made reservations for the Individual and Synchronized Trampoline World Championships in Sofia (BUL) between 16-19 November. While Tumbling and Double Mini-trampoline will be held (The World Games 2022) at Birmingham between 15-17 July.
