Washington Sundar, an all-rounder for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), will unfortunately miss the remainder of IPL 2023 due to a hamstring injury. The youngster has had to deal with yet another injury, which has stalled his career in some way over the past few years.
Sundar’s return to the IPL 2023 season with figures of 3/28 against Delhi Capitals (DC) in his previous game indicated that he was just about to get going. However, his happiness was fleeting as he is likely to return to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for rehabilitation.
While a physical issue to a specific starter could give SRH a determination migraine, not everything is lost for them. The Sunrisers may still be able to recover from Washington Sundar’s injury for three reasons.
First, Washington Sundar’s erratic behavior:
SRH had high hopes for Washington Sundar after purchasing him at the IPL 2022 mega auction for a staggering INR 8.75 crore. Be that as it may, the youthful all-rounder couldn’t have a telling effect in his most memorable season for the Orange Armed force, getting only six wickets in nine games at an economy pace of 8.54.
The problems he has had with injuries probably affected his bowling rhythm. The profits were more terrible this season as Sundar went wicketless in the initial six games. It’s possible that the Sunrisers realized Washington Sundar wasn’t a big part of their success anyway, so they could look for other players on the team.
Second, Aiden Markram has good off-spin bowling:
In the absence of Sundar, SRH might not have a good offspinner, but Aiden Markram, the captain, is probably good enough to take over whenever he finds a good matchup. The numbers show that Markram’s bowling has improved dramatically over the past few months.
In 21 T20 games that Markram has played for the current year, he has bowled in 15 innings, getting 12 wickets at a phenomenal economy pace of 6.94.
The third- Impact Player rule may address the issue of finishing:
This season, Washington Sundar’s bat returns were also disappointing. He has scored only 60 runs from seven games, that too at an unfortunate strike pace of 100. Because he did not finish the game against DC, he came under some criticism, and some fans believe that he is not the finisher that SRH wanted.
Markram’s off-spin bowling ability and the Impact Player rule allow SRH to play a specialist batter at No. 7 in search of the perfect finisher. All-rounders like Abdul Samad and Mayank Dagar may now get more opportunities to prove their worth in Sundar’s absence.
