Despite starting the match with an 8-2 record on the court this year, the Russian international fell 6-3, 6-2. His losses came in straight championships in Germany and the Netherlands.
Medvedev, the reigning winner in Mallorca, had only one dead end with the 20th-ranked Bautista Agut. he progressed despite having to play within last 16 when Nick Kyrgios quit due to an abdominal issue. It was the Spaniard’s fourth victory over a No. 1 player, having his three prior triumphs to be over Novak Djokovic.
“To defeat Daniil, I had to play really well,” Bautista Agut remarked. “He’s the No. 1 seed and the defending champion here in Mallorca.” He recently defeated me. “I gave it my all.”
Medvedev, who will not be able to compete at Wimbledon due to a ban on Russians due to the conflict in Ukraine, had to come from behind to defeat Aslan Karatsev in the round of 16 on Wednesday. Last week, the Russian defeated Bautista Agut in two sets in the quarterfinals of the German Open.
Bautista Agut would face Antoine Bellier, a 303rd-ranked Swiss qualifier who defeated Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-2, in the semifinals. Bellier became the lowest-ranked semifinalist since Juan Manuel Cerundolo won in Cordoba in 2021 as No. 335.
Stefanos Tsitsipas breezed through the quarterfinals, and it took three sets versus American Marcos Giron to reach the final four on Thursday. His 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-3 win took almost 212 hours.
“Today was a long day at work. “It wasn’t easy,” said Tsitsipas. “I had to cope with the heat, and I had to deal with a tremendous opponent.” It took a lot of physical energy. “I was a fighter.”
The sixth-ranked Greek will play Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi, who overcame Germany’s Daniel Altmaier, with score 6-3, 6-4.
