Hindley finished third overall after covering 144.9 kilometers in the Pyrenees. He finished 2:39 seconds behind stage winner Tadej Pogar (UAE Team Emirates), who is now second overall, and 2:15 seconds behind Jonas Winggaard (Jumbo–Visma), who took the Maillot Jaune Is. Hindley ran bravely and fought his way down the hill in the last 16 km to stay in the podium position.
Who is Jai Hindley?
Australian professional cyclist Jay Hindley, born 5 May 1996, competes for UCI WorldTeam Bora-Hansgrohe. He is currently 27 years old and his height is 1.75 m (5 ft 9 in).
Hindley’s father, Gordon, originally from England, and mother, Robyn, have traveled from Perth to Europe and are following the first week of the Tour 2023 with family friends. Jay’s salary with Bora-Hangrohe is currently believed to be around €500,000 Euros and that is until 2024.
Since Cadel Evans won the country’s only title in the competition in 2011, the 27-year-old, competing in his first Le Tour, has perhaps Australia’s biggest chance to win the prized race. When Hindley wins the Giro d’Italia in 2022, he will become the second Australian to win a Grand Tour event in cycling. The Western Australian was the third favorite even before the start of the Tour de France 2023, behind only recent champions Tadej Pogar (2020, 2021) and Jonas Winggaard (2022).
After turning professional in 2016, Hindley has spent the past seven years preparing to ride in the Tour de France, with the intention of entering a competitive race when he is ready. Hindley won two professional cycling races in 2017 – Toscana-Terra di Ciclismo and the Tour of Fuzhou – but it took him until 2020 to start living up to his potential – winning the Herald Sun Tour in Australia and a surprising second at the Giro d’ stay in place ‘Italia.
