CSK have signed experienced South African cricketer Du Plessis: Du Plessis’ experience is invaluable for South African cricket fans, says a franchise co-owned by Chennai Super Kings. It has brought in captains Moeen Ali, Maheesh Theekshana, Romario Shepherd, and Gerald Coetzee along with him.
The proposed Chennai Super Kings-owned Johannesburg team on Sunday lauded former South African captain Faf du Plessis, who will play a central role in their inaugural season of the CSA T20 league.
Johanesburg Invitational (JOH) has roped in the Royal Challengers Bangalore South Africa player, Duanne Plessis. Duanne played for the team for four years and went on to become the captain of the team once upon a time.
Faf (Du Plessis) has been a Chennai Super Kings player for 10 years. He has made an immense impact in the IPL with his tremendous batting performances; he was not available during the 2015 auction, when the team was looking for his services. In 2016, they picked him up with a press release and are glad they did.
We are glad that we were able to get Faf back in the Super Kings family. It will be a good opportunity for him to rejoin the team and help us replicate his success with Chennai while potentially drawing upon his experience as captain of South Africa’s national cricket team, knowing the conditions in India. I’m sure with his entry into the team we will enjoy a good future.
Du Plessis, Moeen Ali from England, Maheesh Theekshana from Sri Lanka and Romario Shepherd from West Indies are four players that CSA selected for their contracted list of 11 players. In addition, a marquee player agreement will allow us to have as many as four more players not on our list who are accessible but need to be approved by the board. This gives South Africa permission to take four players– only one must be a marquee player–to play in the IPL 2018.
We have decided to draft Faf, Moeen, Maheesh, and Romario as the four players who will be contracted by Cricket South Africa. We are also allowed to take one player from South Africa. Gerald is the development player we decided on in total.
Ali has been trained and prepared for this tournament, and has experience in white-ball cricket. Mominul, who is also playing, will be a great asset to the side during the event.
The franchise backed the signing of 22-year-old Theekshana, admiring his recent performances in limited overs cricket. Viswanathan said, “In South African conditions, a spinner of his calibre will be of great advantage and I’m sure that he will be able to do well there.”
With the auction coming up in mid-September, it is likely for us to make a good decision with our investment. The inaugural edition of the CSA T20 League will be played in January-February 2023 and all six franchises have been acquired by IPL team owners.
CSK manages the Mumbai Indians franchise in South Africa, while other franchises are owned by Lucknow Super Giants in India, Rajasthan Royals in India, Sunrisers Hyderabad in India and Delhi Capitals in India respectively.
