The Wrestling Federation of India has announced the Indian women’s team for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The team announced after the selection trial at the Sports Authority of India’s Lucknow Center on Monday. The selectors have kept a mix of youth and experience in this multi-sport event to be played in Birmingham.
They have given chance to young wrestlers like Pooja Gehlot and Anshu Malik in the 50 and 57 kg weight categories. So in 53, 62, 68, and 76 kg, wrestlers like Vinesh, Sakshi Malik, Divya Kakran, and Pooja Danda have been fielded.
Indian wrestlers won 12 medals, half of the women
Indian wrestlers won a total of 12 medals in the 2018 Commonwealth Games on Gold Coast. These include five gold, three silver, and four bronze. Talking about women wrestlers, women got six medals. These include one gold, two silver, and three bronze.
Talking about the overall performance of this season, India had secured third place. He won 66 medals. These include 26 gold, 20 silver, and the same bronze.
Last time’s medalists Babita-Kiran out, responsibility on Vinesh-Sakshi
The selection committee has dropped previous Commonwealth silver medalists Babita Phogat and Kiran. Last time gold medalist Vinesh Phogat, silver medalist Pooja Danda and Rio Olympics bronze medalist Sakshi Malik are on the team. In such a situation, the responsibility of leading the team will be on the shoulders of these senior wrestlers.
India has won 503 medals in these games so far
Talking about Indian performance in Commonwealth Games, India has won a total of 503 medals in these games so far. These include 181 gold, 173 silver, and 149 bronze. India has 102 medals in wrestling in the Games. These include 43 gold, 37 silver, and 22 bronze.
