FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Qualifiers: Format recap: 80 teams across four regions will compete to play in the event, with each region playing six games, over a 15-month period. There’s a variety of regions, but the qualification system is the same for all of them.
The top three teams that emerge from the first round of games, home-and-away with the exception of the African region, will go on to play in a second round of games. The six-team group stages of Asia, Africa and the Americas will be merged into two groups; Europe will have four groups.
For European countries, the top three teams per group will earn a spot to represent their continent. There will be 12 countries representing Europe in the World Cup, regardless of how many games each country plays.
The best 3rd and 4th team to reach the next round on the Africa stage will move onto the next America’s stage.
If you want to host the World Cup, then you have to qualify through the Final Phase. You can do this by winning the FIBA Asia Cup and being among the top 2 qualifying groups in Asia or Oceania. The Philippines and Japan will both qualify for Asia and Oceania, leaving four spots left open.
By the end of the second window, the top three teams from each group will qualify for the World Cup. In addition, if Indonesia qualify for their spot then only the best third placed team in addition to the top two teams will qualify.
The teams who have already qualified are Latvia, Lithuania, Serbia, Spain, France and Georgia. Turkey, Great Britain and Italy will also advance to the next stage based on their good performance in the first round. That leaves both Iceland and The Netherlands in control of their fate who are competing in five games beginning June 27th.
