U19 Munster Schools Senior Cup Qualifier Clonmel High School CBS 17 Colaiste Pobal Bantry 38 Up until halftime, the High School was in the running for this Senior Cup qualifier final. However, tries scored by Bantry on either side of the break proved to be the championship moments, securing the victory for the west Cork School.
After making an excellent move down the wing, Bantry scored the first try. The High School roared back with two more attempts.
After a lineout, the first was a fantastic team effort from a rolling maul that led to Jack Lane scoring. TJ Slattery scored the second goal after a brilliant line break by Sean McEntagert that led to his goal under the posts. Midway through the first half, the High School took a 12-7 lead thanks to a conversion by Slattery. Indeed, David Coyne was stopped at the Bantry try line when the High School nearly extended their lead.
The subsequent goal by Bantry brought the score to 12 all. They scored their crucial third try at the end of the first half, bringing the score to 19-12 at halftime.
A defensive error cost the High School a fourth try within seconds of the restart. The conversion increased the lead of Bantry to 26-12.
The High School was now forced to chase the game, but they had a hard time getting into Bantry’s half. The Cork school crossed for two more tries, but before the final whistle, Liam Maher scored a great try for the High School.
We wish Bantry the best of luck as they play Glenstal in the Munster Schools Senior Cup’s opening round.
The High School will now concentrate on the Mungret Cup, hosting Midleton CBS on Friday, January 13 in Clonmel for the quarterfinal. On December 19, the High School CBS and Thurles CBS played their first rugby match against each other. On a cold but sunny December day, the location was the high school’s 4G rugby field. Both teams showed great skill and had a great time, making the game very entertaining. Despite the fact that the High School won, rugby was the real winner!
The fact that High School CBS coaches Ciaran Burke and Brendan Mullan, Thurles CBS coach PJ Mulcahy, and Munster Rugby’s Club and Community Officer, referee Joe Sheehan, are all former students adds an interesting footnote to this match!
