Champions league winner team list: The Champions League first took place in the 1955-56 season but had another name – the European Cup with just 16 teams. Spanish origin, Real Madrid was the first club to win the competition after beating French Stade de Reims in the finals of the European Cup.
The competition’s name was changed to UEFA Champions League from the 1992-93 season. Chelsea gained the title of the European champion after beating Manchester City 1-0 in the final of the last season of the European Cup.

The Los Blancos have lifted the title 14 times since the inception of the tournament, the most any club has ever managed to win. After winning the first five seasons, Madrid managed to dominate the continental championship once again from 2013, winning four of the five editions of the seasons, including three wins in a row from 2016 to 2018.
Spanish teams have won the title an impressive 19 times so far, which made them the undisputed kings of the tournament. English teams come in the second position, with the winning counts of 14 times while teams from Italy have been European champions 12 times.
