Champions League, Messi equals Ronaldo’s ‘unbreakable’ record: The Secret Behind Messi and Ronaldo’s Unbreakable Champions League Record. After he started the Champions League match against Juventus, Lionel Messi became one of the four players to have played in 19 editions of Europe’s elite club competition.
For Manchester United, the UEFA Champions League is largely missed this year. Cristiano Ronaldo won the last of his Ballon d’Or trophies and will now be a part of Europa League this season. Lionel Messi winning his first match in the competition equals Ronaldo whilst still appearing at Barcelona depresses United’s confidence.
Lionel Messi is on the verge of breaking Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas’ record of 19 Champions League appearances. Currently, he has played in 19 editions of Europe’s elite club competition and is only two away from equalling ROMANO Ronaldo’s record. In addition, Messi has surpassed Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs’ record of appearances as well.
Messi is one more game away from tying the 20 appearance record set by Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas. Messi has won a total of four Champions League titles over the years, all with Barcelona. While at Shakhtar in 2004, he made his first appearance for the club and has played every game since.
PSG Beats Juventus with Kylian Mbappe: As expected, Paris Saint-Germain has defeated Juventus 2-1 for their first Champions League group stage match. With this victory, Mbappe broke Lionel Messi’s UEFA Champions League record of 28 goals in a single season.
Kylian Mbappé is just 22 years old, but his hat trick against Juventus earns him a new record as the youngest player to score 35 goals in UEFA Champions League. His team also wins their first game since 2007 for the first time ever, securing the victory.
In the fifth minute, PSG had found the lead, through Mbappe. Neymar was able to create a break in the defence by linking with Mbappe. Neymar lobbed the ball over to Mbappe and he scored, smashing into the net.
In the 19th minute, Juventus were close to tying the game. Arkadiusz Milik has a header from close range that is parried away by PSG Keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma who gives his defense enough time to double their lead in the 22nd minute. In the 23rd minute, a deflected cross by Ashraf Hakimi put his teammate in on net for team 2, who score one more.
Juventus had a brief spell in the second half in which Weston McKennie scored. The PSG goalkeeper misjudged a cross and was too far away from his line, putting him out of position, leaving him flat footed and vulnerable. With an astonishing amount of height, McKennie jumped over defenders to head the ball home, ensuring that there would be an exciting finale to this match. PSG’s defense withstood the pressure admirably to earn a victory.
