Celebrating The Winning Team: Sunil Chhetri Takes To Social Media After Durand Cup: Sunil Chhetri took to social media to express that he was excited and happy to finally win the Durand Cup. Sunil Chhetri has been on the team for two decades but had never managed to win the title.
Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri won his first international club championship, the Durand Cup final, when Bengaluru FC beat Mumbai City in India’s oldest domestic football tournament in Delhi this Sunday. Bengaluru FC beats Mumbai City 2-1 to help him win the trophy after failing to win it for the past 21 years. Following his victory, Chhetri took to social media and said that finally winning this title is “a fairytale” for him.
After winning the Durand Cup 2022 last night, Bengaluru FC captain Sunil Chhetri said that it was worth waiting 20 years for. He said that it would have been a shame to have had a soldier who played football professionally be unable to hold the trophy. Congratulations Bengaluru FC, you are indeed Durand Cup Champions.
After the match, Indian captain Virat Kohli went into an immediate post-match interview where he commented on their victory. Kohli expressed that the victory was due to a newly assembled team with a new coach and a lot of young players who had been turned into seasoned veterans like him. The way they played together and the result of BFC’s victory made him immensely happy.
As a member of Indian football’s all-time leading scorer, Chhetri is widely regarded as one of the most important players in the country. The talismanic figure has represented the Blue Tigers of India in 129 games and has scored 84 international goals which places him third on the list of top active footballers in the world.
Bengal Governor and Minister were a part of the photo with the Durand cup-winning players, meanwhile a video went viral of Bengaluru captain Sunil Chhetri being shoves by Governor La. Ganesan Iyer from West Bengal. Controversy arose around the game.
In a video that caused outrage on social media, Bengal governor is seen forcefully pushing Chhetri in the background of the ceremony to get himself into the frame during the trophy presentation. The incident went poorly and many of the sport’s biggest names criticized Iyer on Twitter for his despicable behaviour towards one of India’s greatest footballers.
The video showed a West Bengal Government minister pushing a Bengaluru FC striker aside, who was attending the Indian Super League finals. The incident is said to have happened right before Sunil Chhetri resorted to violence.
