Celebrating the Sport on World Badminton Day 2022
Celebrating the Sport on World Badminton Day 2022. On the Saturday after World Badminton Day (2022), the BWF held a charity coaching clinic with impoverished children in Selangor, Malaysia. The clinic was part of the festivities for World Badminton Day. The project was carried out in conjunction with a neighborhood charitable organization known as the Fuzimagic Goodwill Society. Through the BWF Shuttle Time program, four volunteer coaches and four volunteers from Fuzimagic, along with BWF staff, led thirty children (fourteen boys and sixteen girls) from the Mega Orang Asli Children’s Home in a variety of badminton activities that were both enjoyable and welcoming to all participants.
Why exactly is World Badminton Day celebrated?
Mr. Robbert, the Home Warden, said that it is obvious that the children have had a great deal of fun since they are so full of energy. In addition, the sport of badminton is a wonderful way to encourage physical exercise in our children.
Volunteers from Fuzimagic said further, “Our aim is to provide underprivileged children the opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in agriculture, technology, sport, and environment. Getting them to learn badminton is one way we can help provide the children a better life in the future.”
Following the successful completion of the pilot program in 2019, this is the second iteration of the BWF CSR Project in Malaysia. Regrettably, plans for the years 2020 and 2021 had to be scrapped due to the pandemic. Nevertheless, Poul-Erik Heyer, the President of the BWF, said that the exercise was an excellent illustration of what World Badminton Day stands for.
“World Badminton Day provides a unique opportunity for us to simultaneously celebrate and promote the sport we love by encouraging more people to pick up a racket. Seeing the smiles of the children is a fantastic outcome and I hope to see more examples of such participation in the coming days,” he further added.
