Casper Ruud becomes Gstaad Champion again after making Matteo Berrettini taste defeat!
Casper Ruud becomes Gstaad Champion again: On Sunday, the 24th of July in 2022, Casper Ruud won the ninth ATP trophy of his career. Almost half of these victories have now taken place in Switzerland. In a match between the top two seeds, the world’s No. 5 player beat the 2018 champion, Matteo Berrettini, in two hours and 34 minutes by scores of 4-6, 7-6 (4), and 6-2. The Italian had won 12 straight matches before Ruud beat him. As a result, Ruud is now 16-0 in Switzerland (all clay wins).
“The Swiss crowd helps me a lot. Everything about Switzerland reminds me a little bit about Norway. Except that you pay less taxes here,” the top seed said during his on-court interview.
About the game – more details
In the fifth game, Berrettini moved first when Ruud hit his forehand wide on a serve +1. After saving three break points to keep his lead, the No. 2 seed’s serve looked like he couldn’t break it because he won 32 of his next 36 points at the line.
The second set
To keep up with the 2021 Wimbledon finalist in the second set, Ruud had to save two break points at 1-1 and another at 4-4 with a clutch forehand winner up the line. Berrettini got a mini-break to start the tiebreak, but he missed two forehands wide on the following two points, which Ruud used to tie the score.
Decider
In the first game of the deciding set, which was a tight one, Berrettini had to fight off three break points and three unforced forehand errors to hold. But soon after making that shot, he lost his serve for the first time at 1-1 when he missed four forehands. After that, Ruud took control of the game with consistent depth and a higher percentage of successful serves, increasing his lead to 5-1. Finally, the 23-year-old won when his opponent’s backhand return went out of bounds.
His interview
“I changed up a little bit in the third set especially, which helped. The games and the points here go by fast if you’re not ready and focused. You can get broken, or break fast, because the conditions allow you to,” said Ruud.
“It was key for me to hold serve in the second set. [Saving] those break points was very important for me. The tiebreak, everything went in my favor. I tried to keep that momentum going in the third set.”
Ruud moved up to a 3-2 lead in the head-to-head series between the two.
