On the first day of the Miami Open, Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki, two former World No. 1 players, had rather different outcomes.
Williams’ season ended prematurely when she lost in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) against Diana Shnaider, while Wozniacki defeated Clara Burel 6-1, 6-4.
Despite the American’s early departure, her colleague continued to compliment her. During her post-match news conference, Wozniacki said, “Amazing,” when questioned about Williams’ “wild card” status in the women’s draw. The 43-year-old is still competing. Williams, who is now 457th in the tour rankings, has won 49 singles championships, including seven Grand Slams.
The Dane continued by saying that Williams has earned the right to continue playing for as long as she chooses because of her extensive record of achievements, which has made her a legend in the sport.
“I find it astounding that Venus Williams is still active,” commented Caroline Wozniacki. I mean, she’s forty-three years old. She is a gaming legend. She has achieved great success.”In actuality, she has the right to pursue her interests. It’s fantastic if she wants to play for ten more years. It’s also fantastic if she wants to never play again,” she continued.
Interestingly, Williams has missed much of the season due to injury and has only participated in two games. She had also fallen short in Indian Wells in the first round.
After a considerably lengthier layoff during which she gave birth to two children, Wozniacki also made a comeback to the sport. She had advanced to the quarterfinals of the same competition before quitting from her match against Iga Swiatek.
“It’s not easy” is how Caroline Wozniacki praises Venus Williams for continuing to compete against opponents who are much younger than her.
