SYDNEY: Dan Evans defeated Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain in a grueling match today, winning 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 to propel Britain into the United Cup mixed team tournament’s knockout phase with a 3-1 lead.
Britain started the day with a 2-0 lead in the match thanks, in part, to Cameron Norrie’s victory over Rafa Nadal on Saturday. However, Spain came back into the match when Paula Badosa beat Harriet Dart 6-7(6) 7-6(4) 6-1 despite having leg cramps.
Britain will now face the winner of Group C, which includes the United States, Czech Republic, and Germany, in the “city final” on Wednesday. Evans, who recovered from illness to participate in the $15 million prize money event, showed his fighting spirit to defeat Ramos-Vinolas, a late replacement for Pablo Carreno Busta.
The United Cup is taking place in three cities, and the two winners of each group will meet to determine who advances to the fourth round. The “city final” runner-up with the best record from their three matches will be the fourth semifinalist. On January 8, the final will be held in Sydney.
