Brazil maintained their top spot in the FIFA global rankings on Thursday, thus winning the World Cup was insufficient to move Argentina to the top. Check out complete details about it below.
Brazil leads the current FIFA rankings, with Argentina at No. 2 alone
Croatia knocked Brazil from the tournament in the quarterfinals, although Brazil had accrued enough ranking points from its recent performances to factor into FIFA’s calculations. France, a finalist that was defeated, rose one spot to No. 3, while Argentina rose one spot to No. 2.
Despite just winning one game in Qatar and failing to move past the group st
ge, Belgium is currently ranked No. 4, a drop of two spots. The Netherlands and England, both eliminated in the quarterfinals, are still ranked Nos. 5 and 6, respectively.
Croatia rose five spots to take the sevnth spot. Italy, the reigning European champion, is ranked No. 8 despite not making the World Cup. Due to its historic run to the semifinals, Morocco is the best-ranked African country, moving up 11 spots to No. 11.
The top team from the CONCACAF zone is the United States, which is ranked No. 13 after moving up three spots after reaching the round of 16. Mexico is ranked fifteenth. Australia jumps 11 spots to No. 27, while Japan moves up to No. 20 to top the Asian confederation teams. They both advanced to the round of 16.
Only Brazil and Germany have participated in more World Cup finals than Argentina, who have appeared in six total. Argentina played in the inaugural final in 1930, which they lost to South American rival Uruguay 4-2. In 1978, 48 years after their previous appearance in the championship game, Daniel Passarella’s Argentina overcame the Netherlands 3-1 in extra time to win the global title for the first time.
