Brandon Nakashima continues the American success at Wimbledon
Brandon Nakashima continues the American success at Wimbledon. Brandon Nakashima has made a successful start to the competition with a 6-2 4-6 6-1 7-6(6) triumph over Denis Shapovalov. This is the second time he has ousted the Canadian in four meetings, after winning at Indian Wells in March. The two were on opposite sides of a draw for the first time at Wimbledon and this was a closer contest.
With a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(6) victory in the second round, Nakashima became the seventh player to advance in the US this year. He is set to face Australian Lloyd Harris next in another tough match.
Taylor Fritz, John Isner, and more top level American players have also made it to the third round – a high number at this stage of the tournament that has not been seen in 27 years.
20-year-old Japanese player, Kei Nishikori, beat Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov at the US Open. With an astounding 22 winners, he was able to control his mistakes. He said he felt ‘astonishing’ playing against a top-ranked player on such a great stage, and that his game is gradually improving.
When he’s not playing in his matches, Denis is gaining some experience from them. This can only lead to more success for him. Making it to the third round in Paris was huge for his confidence. To know that he can contend with these top players at Grand Slams is another positive development. Denis thinks Alexandre has a bright future ahead of him.
It was challenging for the Canadian to find weaknesses in his game. He didn’t give me much at all to look for. He played an excellent match and served well. From the back court, he meant that he was excellent as well. No doubt he had a great match.
Brandon Nakashima’s victory over Denis Shapovalov has given American fans hope that an American may finally win Wimbledon again. It has been a long drought since an American man has won the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world, but with Nakashima’s impressive performance, that may finally change.
