Though the Charlotte Hornets shut down Brandon Miller for the remainder of NBA Summer League games, the team announced Thursday. In the NBA draft last month, after the Hornets selected him No. 2, the former Alabama star played in five games.
However, between the California Classic and the Summer League, Miller averaged 15.2 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game for Charlotte. He also had 1.2 steals per game on defense.
What did Brandon Miller say?
Moreover, in the Summer League opener against the San Antonio Spurs, Miller’s first big test with Charlotte came. Of course, the Spurs selected Victor Wembanyama with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. In an interview, Miller spoke about how it feels like to compete against Wembanyama, and he confronted that it wasn’t necessarily going to be easy; he added to the excitement by starting Summer League.
“I love it here, man,” Miller said. “It’s pretty exciting that he’s protecting me. Just competing at a high level and enjoying it. I know you will find yours. I think it’s going to be a great game overall.”
Miller’s biggest game was against the Portland Trail Blazers. His 26 points fell as Charlotte lost to Portland 97–93. However, that performance still drew high praise from Miller’s former trainer, Nate Oats.
“He is a shot creator; he obviously scores at a high level. But he handles it well, picks and rolls. Carrying the ball a little more in his hands in this time, he has played well with it. He is a two-faced man. He can protect, rebound. He does many things that affect victory. It was arguably our best season, and he was a huge part of it,” Oates said from Las Vegas.”
Other Info!
Now, Miller will be sidelined for the rest of the Summer League. The Hornets are set to hit the court again Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. against the New Orleans Pelicans.
Therefore, Miller was the 2023 SEC Freshman of the Year after a solid season at Alabama. Although there was some question as to who the Hornets would pick as the No. 2 pick, between Miller and Scoot Henderson, general manager Mitch Kupchak stood his ground, taking Miller every time.
