Jaylen Brown will remain with the Boston Celtics after agreeing to an unprecedented five-year contract extension worth $304 million, sources reported on Tuesday.
If confirmed, the mammoth deal would be the richest contract in NBA history, surpassing last year’s $264 million extension for two-time MVP Nikola Jokic.
Brown, 26, has been one of the pillars of the Celtics’ success in recent years, helping the team reach the playoffs seven straight seasons. Brad Stevens, the Celtics’ president of basketball operations, has been adamant that he would like to see Brown sign a long-term contract since the end of last season.
“He is a big part of us. We believe in them, and I am grateful to them,” Stevens said last month. “I am very grateful that when those people are successful, they go back to work. And when they get hit, they acknowledge it and get back to work. And I know that’s what it’s about. And it’s hard to find.
What do we know so far?
However, those sentiments were shared by All-Star Jayson Tatum, who teamed with Brown to lead the Celtics’ 1-2 push to the NBA Finals in 2021-22 and last season’s Conference Finals.
Tatum declared that retaining Brown long-term was “extremely important” after the East Finals loss to Boston in May. He thinks that Brown is one of the best players in this league. As he is still young and plays both ends of the ball. Also, he has accomplished a lot in his career so far.
With the league’s new collective bargaining agreement, Brown’s new contract will likely lead to some financial maneuvering. This will bring more limits on how teams build their rosters and additional luxury tax penalties.
Other things to consider!
Therefore, All-Star remaining in Boston through the end of the 2028-2029 season will ensure the two-time Brown’s new deal. Brown had one year left on his current contract with the Celtics, which would pay him $31.8 million for the 2023-2024 season. However, the Celtics’ season ended on a disappointing note when the team lost to Miami in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals.
