Barcelona has made an offer to Bayern Munich for star striker Robert Lewandowski, the Spanish Club’s President, told the media on Thursday.
Barcelona President Joan Laporta said they had made an offer for the player and were awaiting a response. He also thanked the player for showing an interest in the club.
Lewandowski’s Bayern contract still has one year left.
Barcelona has made a bid for Bayern Munich’s prolific Polish attacker Robert Lewandowski.
He has been a member of Bayern since 2014, although he declared in May 2022 that his time there is completed.
Lewandowski said at May-end that his story with Bayern Munich is over and transfer to a new club would be the best solution. This Poland striker has another season on his contract with the Bundesliga giant.
Contract rift between Bayern and Robert Lewandowski
The contract extension discussion between Bayern and Lewandowski broke down this season due to different reasons. The club said the player had rejected its offer, while his agent said Bayern never made an offer.
Barcelona is seeking to revamp a year after Lionel Messi left. It had already finished last season without a title, coming in a distant second to champion Real Madrid in the Spanish league and failing to make up to the Champions League group phase.
The Catalan club is in debt. It had recently sold 10% of its Spanish league television rights for the next 25 years in exchange for just over $203 million. Moreover, some of that will be used to sign new players.
Laporta denied going into specifics about Barca’s offer. However, he claimed that they had offered £33.8 million for the player and also a £4.2 million incentive.
Barcelona denied the rumors that Bayern sought upfront cash for acquiring Lewandowski because they were concerned about Barca’s financial predicament.
In 252 games over the last eight years, Lewandowski has scored 238 league goals for Bayern, helping to reach eight Bundesliga championships and the Champions League.
Franck Kessie and Andreas Christensen are the new signings this week to strengthen its midfield and defense, respectively.
Lewandowski has scored 312 goals in 384 Bundesliga games for Bayern and former club Borussia Dortmund. He also hit 35 goals in 34 appearances in the last season to become the Bundesliga’s leading scorer for the fifth season in a row, and the seventh time in total.
