Bangladesh veteran Mushfiqur Rahim announces his retirement from T20I cricket
In a social media post, Mushfiqur Rahim explained the reason behind his decision to retire from the shortest format. He said that he wants to focus on Tests and ODIs going forward. As a result, Mushfiqur Rahim will remain unavailable for the marquee event the coming month in Australia.
He said that he will be available to play franchise league cricket.
“I would like to announce my retirement from T20 INTERNATIONALS and focus on Test and ODI formats of the game. I will be available to play in franchise leagues when the opportunity arrives. Looking forward to proudly representing my nation in the two formats,” said Mushfiqur Rahim in his post.
This decision comes into the limelight after Bangladesh crashed out of the 2022 Asia Cup. Bangladesh did not register a single win against their names.
This was a blow to the Bangladesh team heading into the T20 World Cup. In June, star opener Tamim Iqbal took retirement from T20Is and turned his focus on the longer formats.
Mushfiqur retires from the format and has played 102 matches. He scored 1500 runs. This score includes six fifties and a high score of 72 in T20 format. He enjoyed a brilliant 2018 in the shortest format. Rahim scored 397 runs at an average of 30.53. Rahim had a strike rate of 132.33. In the most recent time, Mushfiqur in the Asia Cup returned scores of 1 and 4 and dropped a crucial catch against Sri Lanka.
Impact of Rahim’s absence in the T20 World Cup 2022
The absence of experienced Rahim will be leaving a huge void in the Bangladesh cricket team. His absence will affect the middle-order going into a T20 World Cup in Australia. Shakib Al Hasan was recently appointed the T20I captain and he has to find the player. It is difficult to find someone who fills the shoes of the veteran on such short notice.
