Nick Kyrgios responds to criticism of Gael Monfils’ career following the ASB Classic loss
Monfils was recently seen racing at the ASB Classic in Auckland. Despite a spirited attempt against Fabian Marozsan in the first round, he lost a tight three-set match to the 24-year old.
Critics on X (previously Twitter) were quick to criticize his lackluster start to the season.
Myles David, a tennis aficionado, tweeted a footage of Monfils’ squandered opportunity during his match and likened it to his career.
Nick Kyrgios, who has been absent from the tour due to injury, supported Monfils’ career and chastised David for his viewpoints.
Monfils returned to the men’s circuit in March of last year, following a lengthy absence due to many ailments.
Since then, he has won 16 of 31 matches, including a title-winning run at the Stockholm Open.
He also advanced to the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open and the third round of the Citi Open in Washington.
Throughout last year, the former World No. 6 emphasized spending time with his daughter, Skai Monfils, who was born in October 2022.
His wife, Elina Svitolina, returned to the women’s circuit last year after taking maternity leave. Fans have often seen the pair cheering one other on during matches.
Gael Monfils’ record at the Australian Open
The Frenchman has had some good successes on tour in recent months. Aside from spectacular victories over Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alex De Minaur, and Cameron Norrie, Monfils also won the 2023 Stockholm Open.
The 37-year-old has a solid record in the Australian Open, with 33 victories in 50 encounters. He reached the quarterfinals in 2016 and 2022, his greatest performances at the Melbourne Major to date.
Monfils will look to advance one step further at the 2024 Australian Open, which begins on January 14.
