Venus Williams, 42, will regress next month by accepting wildcards to compete in the main draws of both the Australian Open and the Auckland WTA tournaments. The news was made public on Wednesday.
Australian Open and Auckland WTA Tournament Wildcards awarded to Venus Williams
The seven-time Grand Slam champion, who most last played on the court at the US Open in September while partnering with her sister Serena, will compete in the singles event in Auckland before the Australian Open, which begins January 16.
Venus Williams will make her 22nd appearance at Melbourne Park, where she first competed in the Australian Open 25 years ago and advanced to the finals in 2003 and 2017.
She made a second-round exit in 2021, which was her most recent appearance.
The prospect of returning to Melbourne to compete in the Australian Open makes me extremely happy “The statement was made by Williams.
“I’ve been competing in (Australia) for more than 20 years, and I’m looking forward to adding to my collection of memories in the competition this year.”
Williams, a former world number one, hasn’t competed much over the previous few years, and as a result, her singles ranking has fallen to 1007th.
With former US Open champions Emma Raducanu and Sloane Stephens, 2020 Australian Open victor Sofia Kenin, and two more Grand Slam winners in the field, she will prepare for Melbourne in Auckland.
“I’m excited to compete in my first tournament of the year in Auckland, “Williams, who won the competition in 2015, said.
I’m eager to compete there in January because the competition and its supporters always make me feel welcome.”
In her career, the eldest Williams sister has won 49 trophies, including the US Open twice and Wimbledon five times.
