Australia is wishing Cameron Green well in the WTC Final and Ashes Series: Daniel Vettori, Australia’s assistant white ball coach, is hoping that playing a significant amount of time in the Twenty20 format during the Indian Premier League (IPL) will not interfere with his players’ ability to prepare, particularly important all-rounder Cameron Green.
According to Vettori, Green’s confidence has been strengthened by a great showing in the IPL 2023, and the young all-rounder is eager to succeed in his first Test trip to the United Kingdom.
Green arrived late after playing for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL Playoffs and was one of the last players to join the Australian team. He was part of the group that spent four days in Formby, close to Liverpool, becoming acclimated.
Green was present for the Australians’ first significant training session in Beckenham on Thursday, ahead of their participation in the World Test Championship final and Ashes series, despite joining the team only 24 hours prior.
“Any cricket now is practice. According to Vettori, he is working behind the scenes to ensure that his bowling loads are up and that he is truly prepared for test cricket.
“The hardest thing for guys is coming out of nothing. That might be a challenge for a couple of guys who have had an extended break and how they get up to speed as quickly as possible,” said Vettori.
The entire 17-man Australian team came together for the first time, and auxiliary pacemen Michael Neser and Sean Abbott joined them for a full day of center-wicket nets practice.
Green enjoyed a lengthy batting practice on lively practice wickets at the Kent out-ground in southeast suburban London despite missing the team’s period of easing in.
Green, whose 47-ball century catapulted Mumbai Indians into the IPL Playoffs 11 days ago at the Wankhede Stadium, is optimistic that his time in the shorter format would aid and not hamper his preparation for the next Test matches. According to a report on Friday from cricket.com.au, the Australian coaching staff is seeing the positive side of the 23-year-old’s white-ball-heavy lead-in to the six-Test tour.
In contrast to the other Australian Test squad members that participated in the IPL, Green played in the Playoffs, therefore Vettori claimed they were happy with his preparations.
In their quest to win their first WTC championship and recapture their first Ashes series away from home in more than 20 years, the Australian team depends heavily on Green.
“It’s great to have him back,” Vettori was reported as saying of Green, who struck his first Test century in Ahmedabad in March before averaging over 50 and posting a strike rate of over 160 in the IPL.
He provides a lot to the team, played well for us throughout the series in India, and just finished the IPL. He’s a major component of the side, so it’s nice that he has some confidence,” he remarked.
While batting, opener David Warner, who had returned from the IPL a week earlier with Mitchell Marsh and Josh Hazlewood, gave the team members pause when he took a severe blow to the left arm. He had to cut short his Test tour of India because he needed treatment on the same arm that he fractured earlier this year.
The article stated that the opener, whose spot in the Test team was all but guaranteed for the first part of the UK tour, recovered from the setback and was the last player to leave the nets in the afternoon.
