On Sunday, the team led by Meg Lanning won their sixth Women’s T20 World Cup title by beating the hosts, South Africa, by 19 runs in the final.
The Meg Lanning-led Australian women’s team won a sixth T20 World Cup title on Sunday. Demonstrating its continued dominance in the shortest format.
In Cape Town, Australia beat South Africa by 19 runs to win the shortest format title for the third time, setting a new tournament record.
At Newlands, Australia won the title by restricting the Proteas women to 137/6. After posting a competitive score of 156/6 in 20 overs after choosing to bat first.
Australia’s opener Beth Mooney was the star with the bat, scoring 74 runs off 53 deliveries on a difficult surface. Ashleigh Gardener’s 29 was the next-highest individual score in the Australian innings.
The Proteas picked up wickets from Shabnim Ismail (2/26) and Marizanne Kapp (2/35) as well as one each from Chloe Tryon and Nonkululeko Mlaba.
The hosts got off to a slow start in the run chase. Scoring just 17 runs in the first five overs and losing the crucial wicket of Tazmin Brits (10). Laura Wolvaardt (61), who played one end for the Proteas, continued to lose wickets frequently.
Wolvaardt assumed command of the innings after Sune Luus’s (2) defeat and began playing more aggressive shots as the required run rate increased.
She and Chloe Tryon (25) put together a 55-run partnership. Before Megan Schutt caught her in front of the stumps as Wolvaardt attempted a lofted shot over midwicket.
Wolvaardt’s presence at the crease was crucial to South Africa’s chances of victory. Her removal ended their chance of a comeback when the team lost by 19 runs.
When Wolvaardt left, South Africa was 109/4 in 16.3 overs. Could add 28 runs in the remaining 21 deliveries while losing two more wickets.
