As part of Australia’s lineup for the World Test Championship (WTC) final and the first two Ashes Tests against England, seam bowler and all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has been called up. In addition to Marsh, Josh Inglis and Marcus Harris have returned to the team as a backup opener and a backup wicketkeeper, respectively.
Marsh, who has been extremely susceptible to injuries, played his final Test in 2019. The 31-year-old has only appeared in one first-class game in the past two years due to an ankle injury that nearly kept him out of the domestic summer before that.
However, Marsh won the Player of the Series award for his performance with the bat in the ODI series against India in March.
The West Australian has been rolling his arm over for the Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2023, but he did not bowl in the limited-overs series against India. The Australian crew remembers four expert quicks for Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Scott Boland, enhanced via crease bowling choices from Cameron Green and Bog. Nathan Lyon and youthful wonder Todd Murphy are the twist bowling pair. George Bailey, the head selector for Australia, acknowledged that the England tour will present a significantly different obstacle than the one that India presented earlier this year.
Cricket.com.au reported that Bailey stated the following:
“The World Test Championship is the culmination of more than two years of the team and its members’ consistent performance at the Test level, preparing them for an Ashes series that is always highly anticipated. The UK assignment is very different from our most recent trip to India, and some of the changes are due to the expected conditions.
“With their respective skill sets, Mitch, Marcus, and Josh are returning to the team and will add valuable depth and flexibility. Given the short time period between the WTC Final and the first Ashes Test, as well as the length of the tour, we believe it would be beneficial to revisit the squad after the second Ashes Test.
Despite Cameron Bancroft’s prolific domestic performance, David Warner has retained his position. In 2019’s five Ashes Tests, the 36-year-old opener scored only 95 runs, and Stuart Broad dismissed him seven times out of ten times.
Australia’s 17-man crew will be managed to 15 on May 28 according to the ICC’s necessity for the WTC last, which will start on June 7 against India at The Oval. After that, the 17-member group will begin getting ready for the Ashes, which begin on June 16 at Edgbaston.
