Mitch Marsh, the Australian cricket player, has suffered another injury setback. He will be missing at least five white ball games for Australia in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup in October 2022.
The all-rounder was ruled out of this week’s final two ODIs against Zimbabwe. He will be absent in the three-match series against New Zealand that follows. He has been dealing with an ankle complaint.
He has returned to Perth for his recovery. He is set to undergo rehab. Marsh has been replaced by Josh Inglis in the Australian squad.
Steve Smith interacted with the reporters in Townsville and said that Marsh’s priority is to be ready for Australia’s T20 World Cup title defense.
“It is disappointing for Mitch but there is some pretty important stuff coming up,” he said.
“He was a big part of our T20 World Cup campaign last year. And I am sure there are big plans for him this year.”
“The priority is to get him right for that.”
Marsh has been a key figure in Australia’s run to a maiden men’s T20 World Cup title last year. His performance was notable scoring 77 off 50 balls in the final. Marsh was given the title of the player of the match in the final.
He has, however, struggled to regularly play for Australia since the T2o World Cup last year.
Marsh was given rest during Sri Lanka’s five-match T20 series in Australia in February. He was aiming for the tour of Pakistan that was to follow.
But Marsh ultimately remained absent on that tour as well. He injured his hip flexor during a training drill.
The 30-year-old was seen on June’s tour of Sri Lanka. He featured in the first ODI playing against Zimbabwe. He made two runs off three deliveries and took 1-22 from six overs.
Marsh will not be in action until at least Australia’s T20 tour of India in mid-September. By that time, the World Cup will be knocking at the door with just a few weeks to follow.
