Athletics: Amlan Borgohain of Finland gets bronze, while Jyothi of India wins silver: In the lead-up to this year’s Asian Games in China, Indian athletes continued to flourish in European competitions as Jyothi Yarraji won silver and Amlan Borgohain took home bronze at the Jyvaskyla Motonet GP 2023 athletics event.
On Wednesday night, Jyoti won the silver medal in the women’s 100-meter hurdles competition, and Borgohain won the bronze.
The 23-year-old Jyothi finished on the podium in Finland by clocking a timing of 12.95 seconds in the event’s final race against an elite field of eight women. Prior to that, she had placed second in her heat with a timing of 12.96.
With a time of 12.80 seconds, Reetta Hurske of Finland defeated the Indian competitor to win the gold medal. Nooralotta Neziri of Finland finished second in bronze with a time of 13.17 seconds.
Jyoti, who was born in Vishakapatnam and now holds the national record in the women’s 100-meter hurdles with a time of 12.82, won her fourth medal of the year.
Jyothi entered the Finland athletics meet with two gold medals under her belt from the T-MNeeting 2023 in the Netherlands and the Kurpfalz Gala 2023 in Germany, where she ran a season-best time of 12.84.
Last month, Jyothi Yarraji clocked 12.89s at the Federation Cup 2023 in Ranchi to make the cut for the Asian Championship, scheduled in Thailand this July. She had finished fourth in a meet in Poland last week.
In the men’s 100m race, India’s Borgohain clocked 10.49 seconds, his season-best time, to finish third.
Oshane Bailey (10.28) of Jamaica and Samuli Samuelsson (10.36) of Finland finished first and second, respectively, ahead of Amlan Borgohain in the 100m dash.
The previous season’s high for Borgohain was 10.52, achieved at the Kurpfalz Gala 2023 athletics competition in Germany last month. The 25-year-old’s national record for the men’s 100-meter race in India is 10.25 seconds.
Amlan Borgohain entered the competition in Finland having won gold in the men’s 100-meter (10.70 seconds) and 200-meter (20.96 seconds) events in the Flanders Cup 2023 athletics competition in Merksem, Belgium, the previous week.
