At the 10th Senior and 7th Junior National Rugby 7s, Haryana Completes a Hat-Trick: In the championship game of the 10th Senior National Rugby 7s Championship at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, Haryana defeated West Bengal 31-0.
The senior men’s team from Haryana, captained by Vikas Khatri, has now successfully won this competition three times in a row. Since it’s a big year for Indian rugby with the upcoming Asian Games and Olympics qualifiers, this national championship in particular has been significant for many players in the senior category. It’s also one of the championships that will determine the future composition of the national squad.
“Among the most important events on the calendar for the federation’s domestic competitions are the Junior and Senior National Championships. These competitions provide a venue for discovering talent for the Indian National Teams and determining eligibility for the 2023 National Games of India. The top 7 senior men’s teams, together with Goa, the National Games’ host city, will compete at this illustrious competition in October. With 28 participating states, this competition has aided in our identification of the upcoming players with a chance to join the Indian National teams.
I want to run into a lot of them at the future national camps. At the conclusion of the championship, Rahul Bose, president of the Indian Rugby Football Union, expressed his appreciation to the Directorate of Sports and Youth Services, the Rugby Association of Maharashtra, and Emergency Services, Maharashtra for their efforts in making this an event to remember.
In a close game in the semifinals of the competition, West Bengal defeated Maharashtra 26-19, and in the other semifinal, Haryana comfortably defeated Odisha 24-0 to advance to the championship. Maharashtra defeated Odisha as well as Kerala, Bihar, Punjab, and Delhi, winning the bronze medal match.
The senior nationals are what we are constantly yearning for. Although other states have made some excellent improvements over the years, we personally are quite pleased that Haryana has been able to win this competition three years in a row. The National Games held the previous year gave us another chance to play and contributed to raising the sport’s profile in Haryana. At Balewadi, the nationals were quite well run. I would like to congratulate Rugby India for another excellent event as both a player and a member of the Rugby India Board. I hope that the popularity of this sport in the nation increases and that more and more states join the competition to compete.
Bihar narrowly defeated Rajasthan with a score of 28-10 in the junior boy’s finals earlier in the competition. The first semi-final matchup featured Bihar and Odisha, with the former winning 24-7. Rajasthan won the second semi-final matchup by defeating Jharkhand 22-17. The goal of Fancode’s first rugby broadcast was to further popularise the sport in India. This championship was that event.
