At the Asian Athletics Championships on Friday, Parul Chowdhary earned her maiden major championship gold medal in the 3000m steeplechase. The 28-year-old clocked 9:38.76 ahead of China’s Xu Shuangshuang and Japan’s Rimi Yopshimura. Meanwhile, Shaili Singh won the silver medal in the women’s long jump with a personal best of 6.54m. Notably, Japanese athlete Sumire Hata won the gold medal with a championship-record jump of 6.97 m in her last attempt. Unfortunately, Indian star Ansi Sojan finished fourth with a jump of 6.41m.
Indian shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor dominated the continental circuit by successfully retaining his championship, before leaving the circuit early due to injury. With his second-round throw of 20.23m, Toor won the gold ahead of silver medalist Mehdi Saberi of Iran and Ivan Ivanov of Kazakhstan. Indian stars Yashas Palaksh and Santosh Kumar booked their places in the 400m men’s hurdles final after their impressive performances at the semi-final stage. In the women’s heptathlon, India’s Swapna Barman is in second place with 3392 points after four events, 56 points behind Uzbek Ekaterina Voronina.
