Ashwin over Sundar in India’s T20 World Cup squad? BCCI source reignites selection debate
Ashwin Over Sundar In India’s T20 World Cup Squad? It has been reported that a member of the selection committee for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has ruled out Washington Sundar’s participation in the Indian team’s roster for the ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup in Australia.
This comes after the all-rounder was overlooked for the Asia Cup 2022 squad.
According to an article published by Inside Sport, a member of the selection committee disclosed that Sundar is not in their plans for the four-yearly tournament and that he has been asked to focus on improving his fitness.
However, the BCCI official continued by saying that seasoned all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin will be favored over Sundar for the team that will compete in the World Cup.
THE MEMBER OF THE SELECTION COMMITTEE WHO WAS TALKING ABOUT THE OPTION OF SUNDAR PLAYING IN THE WORLD CUP SAID THAT “HE IS A GREAT ASSET FOR THE INDIA TEAM.” BUT FOR THE TIME BEING, HE SHOULD FOCUS ON HIS FITNESS AND BE PATIENT WHILE HE WAITS FOR HIS CHANCE. IN REGARD TO THE T20 WORLD CUP, WE HAVE DISCUSSED IT WITH HIM. ASHWIN WILL BE PREFERRED IN AUSTRALIA. For the time being, Washington will serve as a backup in the T20s in the event of an injury.
Runs
The recent runs were scored by Ravichandran Ashwin and Washington Sundar. Sundar has not yet participated in any international competition this year, in contrast to Ashwin, who represented India in the Twenty20 International series that was just finished against the West Indies.
Before suffering an injury that forced him to retire from the national team in 2021, he had been active since 2021. Fans were not shocked when Sundar was left off the team that will compete in the Asia Cup; but, the news that he has been eliminated from consideration for the World Cup has caused many to scratch their heads.
Sundar has been in excellent form as of late, as evidenced by the fact that he took five wickets for Lancashire in his first game in the County Championship. So far, he has appeared in two matches for the County team and has contributed by taking eight wickets at a rate of 24.75 runs per game.
His return to Team India will take place during the forthcoming one-day international series between India and Zimbabwe.
R. Ashwin, on the other hand, made his return to the Twenty20 International format during the T20 World Cup in 2017, thanks to his outstanding achievements in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL).
He has developed himself into an all-rounder who is capable of regulating the innings when it is necessary, and this unquestionably strengthens his case for selection. Ashwin has taken 64 wickets in a total of 54 Twenty20 Internationals and will be an important performer for India in the 2022 Asia Cup.
