Aryna Sabalenka – A Belarusian Tennis Star: Aryna Siarhiejeŭna Sabalenka or Arina Sergeyevna Sobolenko was born on the 5th of May in the year 1998. She is a professional tennis player from Belarus. She has reached a rank as high as world No. 2 in singles and world No. 1 in doubles by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).
Sabalenka has bagged two Grand Slam doubles titles namely, the 2019 US Open and the 2021 Australian Open. She won the doubles with her partner, Elise Mertens. She went on to win 16 career titles in total. Sablenka won ten in singles and six in doubles.
Sabalenka was not so popular until 2017. But soon she became a widespread name by leading the Belarus Fed Cup team to a runner-up finish with Aliaksandra Sasnovich. An interesting fact is that both of them ranked outside the top 75 at that moment.
After the 2017 Fed Cup, she gained more success on the WTA Tour. She reached four finals in 2018 and achieved eight top ten victories. Sabalenka continued her excellence in singles in 2019 winning three titles in China. The battle was highlighted by a defense of her Wuhan Open title at the Premier 5 level and by winning the WTA Elite Trophy at the end of the year.
She finished 2018 and 2019 with rank No. 11 in the world in singles. Sabalenka started to play doubles regularly in 2019. With Mertens as her partner, she competed in the Sunshine Doubles. She won the two Premier Mandatory tournaments in March namely, the Indian Wells Open and the Miami Open.
After the US Open doubles title later in the year, she went on to get qualified for the WTA Finals for the first time. Sabalenka’s best results in singles at the Grand Slam tournaments arrived at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships and 2021 US Open. She managed to reach the semifinals.
Sabalenka’s style of play is quite aggressive. She often accumulated high numbers of winners and unforced errors. Owing to her height, she has a powerful serve.
