Andrew McDonald’s, the head coach of Australia, has played off worries over Steve Smith’s deteriorating form and potential return for the 2023 Ashes series. The 42-year-old emphasized that despite having a strong start to his innings, Smith hasn’t had the kind of luck.
In contrast to the 2019 Ashes series, where the right-hander amassed 774 runs, Smith’s total in the current leg is merely 248 runs over eight innings. The former Australian captain only had one score of fifty or more during the series, a hundred at Lord’s.
McDonald expressed optimism that Smith would score huge runs in the last Ashes Test and claimed that he is not even close to being out of form.
He said, as reported by Perth Now:
Steve is not struggling in my opinion; rather, I believe that he is performing at the highest level I have ever observed. Additionally, the runs occasionally fail to materialize. There is some element of good fortune and luck.
But I don’t see anything wrong with Steve Smith the way he’s working or starting his innings. We are convinced that his finest days are yet ahead of him because he averages about 60 in Test matches of cricket.
At Old Trafford, Smith displayed excellent play in the first innings. He sped to 41 with five boundaries before Mark Wood bowled him out. In the second inning, Wood also caught the 34-year-old for 17.
“I firmly believe that there is still an inning left.” Andrew McDonald’s assessment of David Warner
David Warner is poised for a significant accomplishment, according to McDonald, who also expressed trust in him. Previously, the all-arounder said:
He will undoubtedly feel let down about that. I firmly feel that the big score is just around the corner if you can get those 20s and 30s. I firmly feel that there is still an inning to go.
Warner has only played for fifty years in the ongoing Ashes series and has said that he may retire from Test cricket early next year. The left-hander, nevertheless, has received several starts without turning them into significant scores.
