‘AMAZING EXPERIENCE’: Chloe Kelly Delighted With EURO 2022 Opener. With Women’s Euros having kicked off, many players are excited for this new era of women’s football. For Manchester City’s reliable winger, Chloe Kelly, representing her country England at the European Championships is an inexplicable feeling as she cannot describe the feeling and what the achievement means to her.
The 24-year-old was substituted in the second half when they scored a 1-goal lead against Austria on the summer tournament’s opening night. Suffice to state, England had a great start. With the largest attendance of 68,871 fans present at Old Trafford, Chloe Kelly was in the company of her Manchester City teammates Lauren Hemp, Keira Walsh, and Ellen White. The match made history by having the largest attendance in the women’s European Championship.
Due to her serious ACL injury, Kelly could not be in action for almost a year and had to miss a major half of the 2020/2021 season. Hence, she was delighted to be back on the pitch and be part of the special night in women’s football.
She described, “Amazing, honestly. I can’t put into words how much it means to me. To be out there in front of those fans was an amazing experience and I’m excited for the rest of the tournament. It was a great atmosphere. The fans were brilliant the whole game. To come away with a win is even better and we’re on to the next now.”
Despite their win, England wasn’t at their very best in the evening as they created plenty of chances but failed to convert them into goals. As a result, they could not increase their 1-goal lead. However, Kelly is not disappointed and believes that any major tournament’s first match is concerned about getting the 3 important points on their board.
She adds, “It was very tough. The game was very transitional so we had to get our foot on it and play. They’re a very tough opposition and each game is going to be a different test for us. It’s always going to be difficult, to settle into the tournament. Now the first game is out the way we can focus on how we can break down the next team.”
England will next be seen in action on 11 July, Monday when they will be clashing against Norway in Brighton. Following this, they will clash against Northern Ireland at St. Mary’s Stadium in the group stage on 15 July.
