All you need to know about India at Commonwealth Games 2022
All you need to know about India: The opening ceremony for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 will be held at Alexander Stadium on July 28. Events begin on July 29 and run through August 8th.
Indian CWG 2022 campaign highlights include the following:
Who gets to compete in the Commonwealth Games?
Once every four years, the Commonwealth Games (CWG) are an international multi-sport event attended by countries who are part of the Commonwealth, a grouping of 72 nations that include many former British colonies.
Athletes from member countries compete for gold, silver, and bronze medals in a variety of sporting events, most of which take place in a single host city. The tournament, however, does not include sporting heavyweights like the United States, China, or EU countries.
In 1930, the first Commonwealth Games were held in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The British Empire Games were the name given to it at the time. The Games will be held in Birmingham for the 22nd time. The city will also host para-sports events at the same time.
What is the total number of CWG events?
Currently, there are 16 sports that must be included in every CWG. There are four primary parasports as well.
Athletes can participate in a wide range of activities from swimming and athletics to road cycling and artistic gymnastics to lawn bowls and table tennis to triathlon and freestyle wrestling. Athletics, powerlifting and lawn bowls are among the most popular para-sports.
The host nation can also choose from a variety of optional sports. Basketball 3×3, wheelchair basketball 3×3, and mixed synchronised diving will make their debuts at the Birmingham Games. At Birmingham, there are a total of 23 sports, as well as seven para-sports.
Why is it so crucial for Indian athletes to compete in the Commonwealth Games?
In addition to competing in the Olympics and Asian Games, Indian competitors will also compete in the CWG. There will be athletes from all around the world competing, but especially those from the likes of South Africa and Australia.
The 181 gold medals won by India in the CWG rank as the fourth-highest total in the event’s history. There are a total of 932 gold medals for Australia, followed by England with 714 gold medals and Canada with 62 gold medals (484 gold medals).
As a rule of thumb, the CWG is followed by the Asian Games for Indian athletes. Both competitions are excellent opportunities for athletes to make their name on the global stage .’s The Asian Games have been postponed this year because of the COVID-19 crisis in China.
How come the Birmingham CWG does not provide shooting and archery?
At the CWG, shooting has been India’s most successful event. There were 63 gold medals and 135 total medals won by India in the competition, making them the most successful nation. Shooting won seven gold medals and 16 total at the 2014 CWG in Gold Coast.
Shooting, on the other hand, is an optional event, and the host nation elected not to include it in the 2022 Olympic roster. To put it another way, the planned location for filming in Surrey “provided little or no value” to the West Midlands in Ian Reid’s estimation.
The Indian Olympic Association strongly objected to the decision, and the country’s greatest shooters voiced their displeasure, with India threatening to skip the event. There was a compromise reached afterwards with the International Archery Association (IOA) in which a Commonwealth archery and shooting tournament would be held in Chandigarh, India, and the medals would be added to the overall count after the closing ceremony was finished. Because of problems with COVID-19, these activities were cancelled.
Archery, like shooting, is an optional sport in the charter of the CWG. Only two CWGs were held without archery, the most recent of which was the 2010 Delhi Games.
In Birmingham 2022, which events may India win?
Shooting’s absence will have an influence on India’s overall medal count, but there are other sports in which India has always performed well. Multiple gold medals are expected to be won by Indian sportsmen in wrestling, boxing, weightlifting, and badminton.
How many Indian athletes will compete at the 2022 Commonwealth Games?
More than 200 competitors from 15 different sports will participate in Birmingham for a total of 205 participants.
