At the Miami Open, Taylor Townsend will play Elise Mertens in the second round.
Since the two have never played one another on the main circuit, their head-to-head record is 0-0. Mertens was granted a straight entrance because of her ranking points, but Townsend prevailed against Bronzetti to advance to the next round. This year, the Belgian will be attending the Miami Open for the sixth time.
72nd in the world When Taylor Townsend won the Miami Open 2024 in the first round, she joyfully gave her son Adyn a hug on the court.
Townsend arrived in Miami following an elimination in the second round at Indian Wells.
She qualified for the main draw by way of the qualifiers, and in the opening round, she defeated Lucia Bronzetti 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, putting on an incredible display of play.
Townsend, who was celebrating her third straight victory at the tournament, brought her three-year-old son Adyn along. She gave him a loving embrace on the court after fervently picking him up from the sidelines.
Here is a picture of them interacting:
In April 2021, the American gave birth to Adyn. In March 2022, she made an incredible comeback to the sport and won the ITF W100 in Charleston.
Townsend outscored Bronzetti with four aces and won 72% of her first-serve points. As the chair umpire disregarded Bronzetti’s allegation of a body touch point in the third set, tensions between the two players erupted.
Following their match, the Italian took to social media to express her dissatisfaction and to release a video of the contentious event.
Lucia Bronzetti posted on Instagram, “I’m not sure which is worse—the chair umpire or the player who denied it.”
